Our view: Why San Francisco can’t get along with its in-laws

Accessory dwelling units (a.k.a granny flats or in-law units) inside or alongside existing homes have long been touted as our secret weapon for combating the Bay Area’s housing crisis. After all, they’ve been wildly successfully elsewhere: Vancouver boasts an estimated 25,000 ADUs. More than a third of homes there now include one, most of them added within the last decade.
