Shorenstein Properties unveils Oakland’s first ground-up office tower in more than a decade

On a recent afternoon, dozens of Blue Shield employees gathered in front of 601 City Center awaiting a preview of the office they will start moving into next month. 

The insurance company will be the first tenant to occupy 601 City Center, Oakland’s first new ground-up office tower in more than a decade.

Developer Shorenstein Properties originally broke ground at 601 12th St. in 2008 but put the brakes on construction during the Great Recession.
